Lice Centers of Ohio

I HAVE LICE, NOW WHAT???
> Dry all sheets, blankets, and pillowcases used in the past 3 days in the dryer at HIGH heat for 30 minutes. It is NOT necessary to wash them first. The Dryer is the most effective part in killing lice and nits (eggs).
> Put fresh sheets, blankets, and pillowcases on all beds.
> Vacuum all carpets and upholstered furniture, then empty your vacuum bag or canister.
> Put all unnecessary stuffed animals, pillows, and blankets in garbage bags and store away from human contact for 2 weeks.
> Spray all carpets, upholstered furniture, sheets, blankets, pillow cases (all bedding on both sides) with Absolute Clear Household Spray. DO NOT spray leather, wood, plastic, tile, marble or any smooth surface. Lice can only hold onto things with fibers, NOT smooth surfaces. Lice Centers of Ohio can come to your home and do all the spraying (ask for a quote) or you can purchase the spray and do it yourself.
> Spray fabric (not leather) car seats with Absolute Clear Household Spray.
> IF NOT using Absolute Clear Household Spray repeat cleaning instructions daily for 2 weeks.
> Remove all hair from combs and brushes then treat with ONE of these steps

>> 1. Boil a pot of water. Remove pot from stove. Place combs/brushes in pot for 10 minutes. Dry fabric hair accessories on high heat for 30 minutes. OR
>> 2. Place combs, brushes, and fabric hair accessories in a freezer bag or container for 12 hours. OR
>> 3. Place combs and brushes in dishwasher on sanitizing cycle.

> Notify the school and all of your child’s friends who they have been exposed to in the last few weeks that your child has lice. IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO DO THIS because you will decrease the chance of your child getting reinfested if other parents and the school are on the lookout for lice. NOTE: We are willing to send an anonymous email to a list of contacts you provide to let them know they have been exposed (without identifying your child as the source). Ask us to show you a sample email that we have sent for families.
> Keeping hair in a braid or a bun will reduce your chance of getting reinfested.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT LICE
• Lice DO NOT jump, fly, or burrow. They only crawl.
• Getting lice DOES NOT mean you are dirty. It has nothing to do with hygiene. Lice actually prefer clean hair.
• Lice primarily transfer by close contact with someone who has it. But they can also transfer from contact with clothing, hats, combs, brushes, upholstered furniture and sports helmets.
• Having short hair DOES NOT keep you from getting lice. Even boys with short buzz cuts get lice.
• the only way to insure you will never get lice is by shaving your head (completely bald).
• Color treating hair and chlorine in the pool DO NOT kill lice.
• Using hair products (gel, hair spray, etc.) will NOT keep you from getting lice.
• Lice DO NOT prefer any certain hair colors or textures more than others. Their preferences are related to your body chemistry.
• Lice DO NOT survive longer than 3 days off of a human head.
• The chance of a nit hatching off of the head is rare.
• It is extremely rare to find lice in your eyelashes, even in the most severe cases.
• Lice DO NOT live on pets. They can “hitch a ride” but will not survive on them for longer than 3 days. Many flea treatments will typically kill any lice that transfer to your pet. You can also spray your pet with Absolute Clear Household Spray (cover their eyes).

**We use an enzyme based solution. This breaks down adult bugs and hatchlings on contact and helps dissolve the glue of the nits to make combing easier. Below, we have included how we use our products and active ingredients.

HEAD LICE TREATMENT
--FOR USE AS A LICE
TREATMENT:
Gently tumble bottle upside down to mix enzymes before each use (do not shake). For best results, hair should be freshly washed, conditioned and dry. There should be no residue of hair styling products (gel, mousse, hair spray, oils) or other lice treatments on hair. Spray hair and scalp with Absolute Clear until FULLY saturated from the scalp to the ends. Hair should be soaked until it is dripping wet. Detangle hair. Divide hair into thin sections and use Terminator Nit Comb to thoroughly comb through each section to remove lice and nits. If hair starts to dry out while combing, re-spray as much as needed to keep hair fully saturated during entire treatment. For best results, after combing leave Absolute Clear on hair for 24 hours. Hair can be dried and styled as usual. We recommend pulling hair up in a bun or braid and misting daily with Absolute Clear. This product is not an oil and will not leave a greasy residue on hair. Repeat treatment every 3-4 days until lice and nits are completely gone.

--TO USE AS A DAILY PREVENTATIVE:
Gently tumble bottle upside down to mix enzymes before each use (do not shake). After washing and towel-drying hair (hair can be damp but not dripping wet), spray Absolute Clear thoroughly all over scalp. Use regular comb or brush to distribute spray to the ends of hair. Absolute Clear should be sprayed on hair fist, before other styling products are used. If hair is not being washed daily, between washings re-spray a light coating of Absolute Clear on hair daily. For best results, Absolute Clear must be reapplied every day and hair should be pulled up in a bun, braid or ponytail. Re-spray a light coating on the hair after pulling hair up.
